GMO growing concern

The days of shopping at your local supermarket with peace of mind for fresh fruits and vegetables, as nature has intended, are long gone thanks to GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) DNA biotechnology. GMOs are living organisms, plant or animal, that have been genetically modified using molecular genetic methods such as gene cloning and protein engineering. Bacterial genes were originally introduced into food crops to boost their growth, nutritional benefits, and make them resistant to commercial herbicides.

It stands to reason that if they are genetically engineering foods to be more resistant to herbicides through the introduction of recombinant bacteria such as E.coli, you have to ask yourself if it is safe to injest. There is still much concern on the subject of biotechnology and its long term effects on the human body, and an even more growing concern about putting pesticidal proteins in our plants to eliminate the need to spray them with herbicides altogether. Once pesticidal proteins are introduced into our food source, there is nothing we can do to protect ourselves other than entirely exclude them from our diet.

Since we do not all have the necessary resources to grow or tend our own garden, this solution seems easier said than done. However, on the upside, you are not alone in your fight against GMO food consumption. An increasing number of concerned citizens are taking a stand by making their communities more food-friendly in growing organic produce on small plots of land, then turning around and selling them at their local farmers market.

If a local farmers market is not an option for you, look for organic grown or GMO free produce at your local supermarket or health food store. Although more costly than non-organic produce, in the long run it is well worth the investment. It is cheaper to stay healthy than to run up excessively high medical bills.

By taking the time to make your family healthier, you are making a difference in adding another voice to the many already concerned about GMOs and its effect on our food chain. As a unified voice, the consumer can once again be king.,
